Fundraising Drive April 2011

The “Friends of Sligo University Hospital” has announced its major fundraising drive for 2011.  To raise funds towards the purchase of a Soft Tissue Laser Machine  for the Sligo University Hospital Urology Service which will revolutionise the way in which treatment is provided to patients with Prostate Disease.

A soft tissue laser device will provide the following benefits to the patients:

  • Patients with benign prostate disease who would previously have undergone operative procedures will be able to have their procedure carried out by laser.  This is a much less invasive procedure and will mean that it would be possible for a large percentage of patients to be treated as day cases.
  • Potential for complications will also be reduced given that there is less potential for infection.
  • Length of hospital stay will be reduced dramatically thus freeing up beds for Emergency patients and reducing numbers of patients on trolleys.
  • This state of the art treatment would be available in our local hospital, thus avoiding the need for patients to travel to other centres outside the region.

Unfortunately as with any new equipment, this is expensive, (€140,000).  We are therefore asking the local community to get behind this initiative, so that patients (and in particular the male population of this local area), will benefit.

Fundraising events have been organised throughout the Sligo/Leitrim South Donegal Region for Good Friday (Friday 22nd Apri 2011l).

Over 30 sponsored walks/jog/runs will take place across the region  in the following localities:

Dromahair, Boyle, Collooney, Carrick-on-Shannon, Manorhamilton, Ballinamore, Cliffoney, Grange, Drumcliffe, Rosses Point, Sligo Town, Ballymote, Enniscrone, Castleconnor, Ballintrillick, Drumshambo, Easkey, Screen, Ballisodare, Riverstown, Strandhill/Ransboro, Ballyshannon, Bundoran, Boyle, Gurteen, Carraroe, Tubbercurry.

We would ask as many people as possible  to participate in the event and make a real difference to patients within our region.

Further information can be obtained from Mary Tighe  on (087) 418 2366  or by email who will provide details of the event in your local area.

Thanking you in anticipation.
