The Hazelwood Haunting will take place during the Halloween holiday over two nights in Hazelwood Forest from October 27th and 28th.

We will bring the dark of the woods to light and play on people’s fears through a spectacular creation of visual and sound effects. We will have zombies, spiders, water monsters, Dracula, spooky trees, scream mania, grave yards and much, much more. The Hazelwood Haunting is a spooky spectacular family fun event. Imagine the beauty of the forest by night and now imagine the forest brought to life by the unknown. The uncertainty of not knowing. Having to process sounds and visual effects that you are unsure about. Having your inner fears exposed in a safe and friendly environment.

SHOUT was firstly established in 2003 with the aim of improving the provision of Cancer Care for patients within the local region.

SHOUT is dedicated to supporting cancer patients and their families through their cancer journey, by:

Supplementing existing services for patients in the North West Region.

Financial Support to patients and their Families.

Cancer Related Research

Over the years SHOUT has received much support from patients, families and friends of patients many of whom donated proceeds from personal events such as anniversaries, celebrations etc. Oncology Staff Members, local business, pharmaceutical industry and many others also provided much needed support.

To date SHOUT has achieved much both in funding much needed equipment, as well as providing funding to individual patients in their fight against cancer.

Some of the achievements to date through SHOUT include:-

Funding of dedicated hostel facilities for local patients and their families attending Radiotherapy in University Hospital Galway- avoiding the need to travel or to pay for overnight accommodation in Galway.

Funding state of the art equipment for cancer treatments such as cold cap machine and other equipment within the Oncology Unit.

Funding complimentary therapies for cancer patients such as reflexology.

Psychology support for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Providing funds towards the upgrade and transfer of the Oncology/ Haematology inpatient ward in Sligo University Hospital

Ongoing financial support to the Sligo Cancer Support Centre for all their valuable work in supporting patients and their families.

Payment of hairdresser for patients undergoing cancer treatment within the Oncology/Haematology Ward.

Transforming part of the inpatient ward from a clinical area into a warm comfortable area in which patients and relatives can relax and spend time together.

State of the art entertainment System in the Day Oncology Ward and the Oncology /Haematology Ward.

Now much of the focus of SHOUT is providing financial support for individual cancer patients who are encountering hardship during their cancer treatment. This has become very much more of a focus for SHOUT in the current financial climate and one that is crucial to making the cancer a little easier. The SHOUT Committee are eternally grateful for your hard work and ongoing support.

If you have any queries in relation to SHOUT or would like to organise an event to raise funds for SHOUT/ donate to SHOUT please contact Marie Casey on MarieC.Casey@hse.ie, or staff in the Oncology Unit.

Friends of Sligo University Hospital Fundraising Drive for 2013/2014 Cardiac Services

The Friends of Sligo University Hospital is undertaking a major fundraising drive for 2013/2014 to raise funds towards vital cardiology equipment for the hospital.

Cardiovascular disease is the single largest cause of death in Ireland. In 2008, heart disease / diseases of the circulatory system accounted for more than one-third of all deaths and one in five premature deaths.

Hospital bed use is expected to increase further over the next decade as the number of people aged over 65 in Ireland is predicted to increase by 41%. Despite improvements, Ireland still ranks below the EU 15 average for life expectancy for both men and women. Raising funds for cardiac services will help improve patients’ chance of survival and avoid the need to travel outside the region for these vital services. We hope to raise more than €200,000 which will go towards funding for a Cardiac Catheter Laboratory/equipment in Sligo. Achievement of this objective will serve to consolidate the current cardiac services and to improve the cardiac services within the region. There is a crucial need for this additional funding to develop the service further in line with best practice.

Sligo University Hospital was the first hospital in Ireland to introduce the concept of a visiting Cardiac Catheter Lab in 2000, providing a diagnostic service for patients with suspected heart disease or heart attack (on a one day per week basis). A fixed Cath Lab (and staffing for this unit) is required in order to provide a state of the art service for heart attack patients/cardiac in the Northwest. We see the vision for the hospital as becoming a regional centre for the delivery of cardiac services which in turn would reduce the number of patients who are forced to travel outside the region for their investigations and treatment.

Fundraising events have been organised throughout the Sligo/Leitrim, South Donegal Region over the recent months including:- Sponsored Walks, 400 Charter Cycle, Runs, Ceili events and Sligo’s Got Heart Talent Shows throughout the region. Keep a close eye for up and coming events namely; An Post Cycle on May Bank Holiday Weekend (4th and 5th May 2013) – proceeds to Cardiac Services via Friends of SRH.
